Training Contracts

Our training contracts offer early responsibility, comprehensive development, and significant client exposure, designed to equip trainees with the skills and experience needed for a successful legal career. Trainees are valued members of their teams, taking on meaningful work from the outset and developing strong client relationships. The firm is committed to delivering a training experience that fosters both professional and personal growth, while maintaining the highest standards of service to clients.

Structure

Broadfield Trainees follow the SQE pathway to qualification. For individuals that are yet to complete their SQE exams, the firm will sponsor the future Trainee to complete a year-long preparation course, the LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) with the University of Law. We recruit one year in advance so that future Trainees can finish their SQE exams before joining the firm and starting their training contract.

Our Trainees experience working in four different teams in six month long “seats” across two years. We also offer client secondments to those interested in getting exposure to working as an in-house lawyer.

After a comprehensive induction, Broadfield Trainees experience training from both department specific structured programmes and desk-side mentoring from supervisors. Trainees work with a variety of team members to explore different practice areas and gain a broad exposure to high-quality work.

Seats

Trainees undertake four six-month seats across a variety of practice areas, which include:

  • Commercial Real Estate
  • Litigation
  • Restructuring and Insolvency
  • Private Real Estate
  • Private Wealth
  • Family
  • Planning, Infrastructure and Public Law
  • Corporate
  • Commercial
  • Charities
  • Employment

While Trainees will be based in their designated home office, there may be a requirement to complete a seat in one of our other offices in order to meet the needs of the business and provide a broad training experience.

Eligibility

We’re looking for future Trainees that are driven, collaborative and intuitive. Candidates need to be excellent communicators that enjoy working as a team and thinking on their feet. Trainees should have strong commercial awareness, attention to detail and organisational skills.

To apply for a training contract starting in 2027, candidates should have:

Completed, or will complete before September 2026, one of the below qualifications:

  • LLB or equivalent law degree
  • GDL/PGDL
  • LPC/LLM
  • SQE 1
  • SQE 1&2

Strong academics at undergraduate and A-Level or equivalent, ideally a 2:1, however we consider all mitigating circumstances and do not score applicants based on academic attainment.

Recruitment

Applications for training contracts starting in September 2027 are now open and close on 29th March 2026.

Our recruitment process is made up of an online application form including essay style questions focussing on your motivation for a career in law and working at Broadfield. We understand that candidates will use AI tools to help research, structure or proof-read their application, but applications that rely too heavily on AI will not score well, as our assessment is based on genuine personal experiences and authentic reflections.

If your application is successful, you’ll be invited to a pre-recorded video interview for us to get to know you better.

The final stage of the recruitment process is an in person assessment centre held at the end of June at the office you applied to.
