Planning & Infrastructure: Broadfield advises on reopening of the Northumberland rail line

19 December 2024

The law firm Broadfield has advised on the historic reopening of the Northumberland rail line.

Closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching rail cuts, the Northumberland line reopened on 15 December 2024 connecting Newcastle and Ashington. The project involved the reopening of an 18-mile section of the line and the construction of six rail stations.

A team of specialist property, planning, and infrastructure lawyers at Broadfield advised the project promoters, Northumberland County Council, on the project.

The team of seven lawyers provided advice on planning and consenting matters and on the compulsory purchase of land surrounding the station sites, lease agreements, and transfers of the stations to Network Rail.

The project was supported by several key partners, including the Department for Transport (DfT), Transport for the North (TfN), Nexus and Northern Trains Limited, North Tyneside Council, North of Tyne Combined Authority, and Newcastle City Council.

The NCC said,

‘The Northumberland Line is a truly ground-breaking project of national importance that has been talked about almost since the line was closed for passengers over 60 years ago. (…) It’s entirely down to the hard work and dedication of all the people and organisations working on this hugely ambitious and complex scheme that we’re now just days away from opening.’

Broadfield has considerable experience in delivering rail and other transport infrastructure schemes, having advised on the Northern Line extension to Battersea Power Station, the new overground rail link to Barking Riverside, Transport for Greater Manchester, and National Highways.
