Samuel J. Weiner’s practice covers complex, commercial, and intellectual property litigation and disputes, regulatory investigations, and strategic counseling, with a focus on privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and competition issues. He is recognized for pragmatic, solution-oriented advice that helps clients manage risk while maintaining operational momentum.
Sam advises clients on international, federal, and state laws and regulations related to data privacy, cybersecurity, and AI. His counseling includes advising on the legal implications of using AI, compliance with global regimes, and AI governance, best practices, and responsible use. Sam also assists with the design and implementation of privacy programs, and develops data transfer compliance programs and supports product and compliance teams in addressing changing regulatory expectations. He also prepares clients for data security incidents with playbooks, training, tabletop exercises, and response planning.
Additionally, Sam is an experienced litigator and represents clients in federal and state trial and appellate courts and before arbitral panels. He has represented financial institutions, public and private entities, and individuals in matters involving privacy breaches, false claims to federal and state governments, consumer protection, competition, intellectual property, securities, and technology-related disputes.
Before joining Broadfield, Sam practiced at Dentons and Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP. Earlier in his career, Sam worked in public education as a history and special education teacher and special education administrator, and he was also a Teach for America corps members from 2012 to 2014. He earned his JD, cum laude, from Fordham University School of Law and holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from Fordham University Graduate School of Education and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
- Represented a cryptocurrency business in a securities enforcement action, supporting trial preparation, summary judgment briefing, and witness examination planning.
- Advised an e-commerce company in arbitration relating to data security practices following a cybersecurity incident, managing discovery, and supporting a favorable resolution.
- Defended insurers, media, and consumer-facing companies in putative class actions alleging privacy statute violations and incident-related claims, including motions to dismiss and arbitration strategy.
- Represented clients in investigations by the DOJ and FTC, state attorneys general, and other regulators, including CID responses, presentations, remediation planning, and compliance enhancements.
- Supported clients with AI governance, including internal reviews and risk assessments relating to AI use in hiring and product settings.
- Counseled clients on privacy and cybersecurity compliance across U.S. state and federal frameworks and international regimes, including program design, audits, and training.
- Managed complex litigation discovery programs, including expert coordination, deposition preparation, and large-scale document review.
