About

James Duncan is a Corporate lawyer with over 25 years of experience. He advises institutions, long-term fixed income pension fund managers, and ultra-high-net-worth investors, bringing his recognised expertise in build-to-rent, affordable housing, and infrastructure investment dealing with co-investment structures, debt finance, regulation, grant funding and exit. Recently, James has worked to advise SPV boards and institutions on their governance and compliance obligations, and investment (and exit) strategies following the Grenfell tragedy and the lifting of the corporate veil under the Building Safety Act.

He has also been advising FCA regulated fund managers and broker-dealers on navigating the challenges and opportunities of the dot-com crash, the 2008 financial crisis and Brexit. These events profoundly affect managers and traders, invariably leading to regulatory changes across a broad spectrum from fund structuring, manager regulation, systems control, staff compliance regimes and remuneration, commission payments, audit compliance and regulated capital.

At Broadfield we are reshaping the landscape by offering our investment clients an integrated upstream fund formation and manager structuring, broker-dealer and underwriting advice, legal, governance and compliance services. James’s strategic expertise in downstream investment covers a wide range of portfolios including commercial real estate, residential real estate, infrastructure, energy, transport and technology across the UK, U.S., the EU, Southeast Asia and China. Through SHP Legal Services, a sister company of Alvarez & Marsal, Broadfield can connect clients with a coordinated network of regulated fund and investment advisory partners that offer formation, legal, administration, investment advisory, compliance, and tax services in your jurisdiction.
