Google is negotiating to build a large datacentre on a northeast England site that suffered industrial vandalism a decade ago. Sir Keir Starmer and business secretary Peter Kyle are in favour of building a number of datacentres at Teeswork and earlier this summer granted the site AI Growth Zone Status. However, the project faces challenges due to a dispute between Starmer and energy secretary Ed Miliband, who supports BP’s plan for a major hydrogen production facility on the same site.
Broadfield, acting on behalf of Teesworks and endorsed by Houchen, has consistently maintained an objection to the proposed BP hydrogen plant.
"If Google and others were to get the green light to begin building datacentres at Teesworks, it would mark a remarkable change in fortune for the region."
