A Crossroads for AI and Copyright

Two recent cases have shed light on how US courts are approaching the unlicensed training of large language models (LLMs).

In an article for The Bookseller, Tancred Campbell discusses how the rulings appear to be a win for developers, after courts ruled in favour of them (Anthropic and Meta), finding that the training of LLMs on published materials without a licence could be justified under the US doctrine of “fair use”.
